Funny Valentine Poems For Girlfriend/ Boyfriened or Married Couple 2016

Funny Valentine Poems

Nothing works as well to break the ice between two people as humor, and funny Valentine poems are a great way to celebrate that day. While it may be easier to buy a card with a clever poem written in, it is not too difficult to come up with your own funny creation and present it to the object of your affections

Methods of Creating Funny Valentine Poems

The Limerick

The limerick is a form of poetry that has been around for ages. Sometimes used in scandalous ways, it usually takes the form of a few clever rhymes with a humorous and often surprising twist at the end. The rhyme scheme for a limerick usually goes A-A-B-B-A (in other words, the first, second and fifth lines end with words that rhyme, and so do the third and fourth, though they use a different word). An example would be:You know that my heart has been stolen,
And if you leave it'll tear my soul in,
To pieces so small,
You'd not find them at all,
As if over my love you're steamrollin'
The syllabic scheme of the limerick is important as well, with a 9-9-5-5-9 syllable setup (though often liberties can be taken with the words, as with "in - to" in the above example). Especially with funny Valentine poems the limericks may seem to be heading towards something lewd or bawdy but then suddenly turn out to be innocent. The most famous is usually a variant using the words "bucket" and "Nantucket":
A farmer who hailed from Nantucket,
Kept all of his coin in a bucket,
Til his daughter, called Nan,
And her cad of a man,
Made a grab for that pail, and Nantucket.

What Makes Something Funny?

In the realm of poetry, usually it is a clever turn of phrase that takes the poem in an unexpected direction that makes it funny. Also, the combination of the familiar with the unfamiliar might also make something funny (in the first poem, the image of a steamroller going over a heart smashed to pieces is incongruous enough to be amusing).
When you can't manage to be funny, however, there is always the option of being clever, instead. Using your Valentine's name is one great method to personalize a poem, and whether the poem is good or not, the effort made to create it in the first place can't help but be flattering.
Dear Antoinette,
I'm willing to bet,
That you might like me.
The reason, you see,
Is because I like you,
And now for the killer,
This poem's by Gray Miller.
While the above poem didn't actually work to win Antoinette's affections, she was very amused and appreciative of the sentiment. The simple rhyme scheme is known as "rhyming couplets" and is one of the easiest ways to create poems.

Online Sources for Humorous Valentines Day Poems

If the creative juices have run dry, you may need to settle for finding some kind of online source for your poems. One of the easiest is Poem Source which features short and occasionally funny poems by poets like William Blake, Robert Burns, Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, Tennyson, and others. It may take some digging to actually find a funny poem, but the classics were full of humor. Do not, under any circumstances, try to pass off someone else's poem as your own - aside from being plagiarism, and therefore wrong, if the person finds out it is almost certainly to be an unbearably embarrassing situation.
Regardless of the source, though, if you see your Valentine smile, you will know it has been a success.
